The City of Powell
Powell is a city in Delaware County Ohio, and is usually interpreted
as the incorporated City of Powell and also the unincorporated adjoining areas
of Liberty and Orange townships. The population is approximately 11,500 and is
a total of 3 square miles. It sits about fourteen miles north of Columbus, between
the Scioto and Olentangy rivers.
The community was previously named Middlebury when the first
settlers came from the Middlebury, Connecticut area in 1801. Residents decided
to adopt the name Powell in 1857 after Judge Thomas Powell established the
first post office in the community. In 1947 Powell became incorporated as a
municipality.
Powell is conveniently located about a mile away from the
Columbus Zoo, and water park, Zoombezi Bay.
Powell has a notable historic central business district featuring a
number of antique shops. It was named 18th on the list of CNN Money
and Money Magazine’s 100 Best Places to Live in the United States. Powell was named
one of the "Best Places to Get Ahead," as well as, one of the
country’s "Five Best Places to Raise a Family" on Forbes.com. The city was most recently
ranked number 5 among 955 Midwestern communities for quality of life!
